Henry Long 2025 Class-Elected Commencement Speech
He rose to prominence earlier this year, winning the New York City Democratic Mayoral primary in June. Zohran Mamdani is a democratic socialist and candidate for mayor of New York City. Kristol, the son of famed conservative intellectual Irving Kristol, was born and raised in New York City. In an interview with The Forum on October 9th, Bill Kristol told Dhriti Jagadish and Shiv Parihar that he would vote for Zohran Mamdani if he were a resident of New York City. Even though we’re only one month into our virtual first semester, this class already means a lot to me.
What You Need to Know About the Soon-to-be-Launched Data Science Major
In my free time, you’ll find me hanging out with friends, on a late night walk, or working on an arts and crafts project. One of my favorite things about CMC is the community, and I’m really looking forward to contributing to helping make Wohlf feel like home for everyone as an RA. I’m excited to be able to help spread that positive community at Green and throughout campus.

Professor Jessica Zarkin, who teaches courses on Mexican and Latin American politics, noted that Trump would likely use the threat of tariffs as a bargaining chip with Mexico to ensure cooperation on stricter border policies. In a similar vein, Professor Jennifer Taw, Chair of the IR program, expressed concern that Trump—alongside Israel—may prosecute a war with Iran before Iran acquires nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Minxin Pei, Tom and Margot Pritzker ’72 Professor of Government and George R. Roberts Fellow, an expert on China, warned of rising Sino-American tension and the potential for a crisis over Taiwan under a Trump Administration that will pursue protectionist and hawkish policies. She argued that this approach is not new, but has been part of the politics of American foreign policy at various times in U.S. history. Members of CMC’s International Relations (IR) faculty delivered brief remarks on various policies and approaches that President-elect Donald Trump will pursue on the international stage once he takes office.
Class of 2024: First-Year Class President Candidate Statements
- I also enjoy playing intramural dodgeball, watching baseball (Go Dodgers!), playing video games (most are made by a small indie company called Riot), and eating most of my meals at Collins.
- It’s impressive when first-year students step out of their comfort zones, especially by doing things such as running for class president!
- In an interview with The Forum on October 9th, Bill Kristol told Dhriti Jagadish and Shiv Parihar that he would vote for Zohran Mamdani if he were a resident of New York City.
- Koch observed that Trump’s actions do not always align with promises made on the campaign trail.
- Fostering community motivates me as a Romero Success Coach, CPB’s Vice-President of Creative Programming, and as Club Soda’s Co-President!
As a first-generation, low-income student, I understand the numerous challenges that come with college, even when it’s virtual. As a transfer student, I am so excited to get to know my grade (and everyone on campus) even better as one of the senior apartment RAs. In my free time, I love to go to the beach, thrift, birdwatch, and of course hang out with friends and meet new people! I’m always up for a hoops conversation, so feel free to come talk to me anytime!
CMC students deem the new data science major as “very admirable and a necessary step for CMC to remain a leading national liberal arts college,” according to David Roman ‘22, a current public policy major with a data science sequence. “Teaching a data science course like Econ 160 involves a lot more in-class lab work, where professors present a lecture and students operate software in class,” said Batta in response to the differences between teaching a traditional accounting course and Accounting Data Analytics. While the data science major is intended to make students experts in that realm, CMC will continue to offer the data science sequence but plans to change its name to distinguish it from the major. However, the sequence offers students familiarity with data science.” In other words, CMC intends the sequence to be interdisciplinary, as students must also complete a major. The data science major will prepare students for a data-driven world with machine intelligence.”
When it was their turn to talk, they insisted that Trump won because his supporters were determined to amplify racism and misogyny. As the class gave their answers – economic malaise, Harris’s lack of time, Biden’s unpopularity – I noticed a group of classmates making incredulous, repulsed facial expressions whenever someone answered. Because of this, there are some concerns about the major’s emphasis on math and statistics and lack of offerings in computer science. They’re good people who could work for him though, in New York.

Otherwise, my cmc markets review doors are always open for y’all to peruse my overflowing bookshelf, craft together, or just vibe! Feel free to ask me about these or any campus organizations, and we can explore them together. I’m excited to help cultivate a welcoming and engaging community within Fawcett and the CMC community at large.

Some will argue that the best response to the vastness of the unknown is to be larger than life, to be greedy, to grab what you can. The universe is bigger and stranger than you could possibly imagine. If any of you have attended convocation over the past four years, you’ve heard it many times before.
Introducing the 2025-26 RAs!
My interests are all over the place and I love talking about them so please DM and let’s chat! I spent most of my time pre-Corona trying different restaurants around NYC. We’ve done an amazing job connecting online and engaging in difficult conversations and my wish is to continue to embrace change and improve our community with your help. We’ve had to be the most innovative class yet to deal with all this change- which I am proud to say we embraced beautifully.
I got to see people with last names like mine hold political office, lead businesses, and serve as community leaders. I’m Zane Yamamoto and I’m running to be your first-year class president. With that in mind, feel free to message me any time– and vote for me this weekend for FYCP! I want to be the mouthpiece for our class’ issues and wishes, so I plan on taking the initiative to talk with every single first-year. In high school, I worked for the community engagement program at a local museum and successfully led clubs like Speech and Debate, Model UN, and Mock Trial. I’m Liann Bielicki, and I’m running to be your class president.
Bill Kristol Says He Would Vote For Zohran Mamdani for New York City Mayor
I’m excited to help make our dorm feel like home and am pumped to be working with Kate (my co-RA) to plan some awesome events. If I am not in Crown, you’ll see me at Ath tea with a chocolate strawberry, at the library, or collecting sloth and cat paraphernalia for my dorm! At CMC, I am majoring in PPE-Gov, and I have an intermittent sequence in imposter syndrome.

CMC is such a tight-knit and special community, and I’m so excited to help continue building a strong, supportive, and fun space in Berger. On campus, I’m involved with SOURCE Nonprofit Consulting and Claremont Women in Business. I look forward to helping build an amazing Berger community alongside Crystal and cannot wait to meet everyone!
In my public policy class’s election debrief that evening, our professor asked why we thought Trump won. In fact, the post was meant to do the opposite, reminding us to love our neighbors, even when we disagree with them. One Instagram follower responded, “Is this a joke? I also reposted something last Wednesday, “No matter who is president, Jesus is King.” 25 of my peers had unfollowed me by the next day. At CMC, I have felt empowered to embrace controversial opinions.
And I witnessed people from cultures across the globe who didn’t just coexist but thrived together. I do it because growing up in Hawai’i, I was surrounded by other people of color. Specifically, I’m interested in how, as FYCP, I can develop virtual events and represent our class’ needs with an eye towards sustainability, mental health, and inclusion. My campaign values are community and accountability. I’m from the Bay Area, but I’m itching to be on campus with you all in Claremont. I want to represent the whole class and your ideas, dreams, and wishes.
Addressing that sentiment—in a moment of rare optimism for the night—Professor Taw encouraged students to still pursue such work in the short term and urged them to learn how the system works so they can effect meaningful change later in their careers. During the Q&A portion of the discussion, students conveyed a general sense of unease regarding how a second Trump presidency will impact America’s standing in the world—from its credibility amongst allies to its posture toward international law and human rights. In response to such concerns, Mark Huber, Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, explained that CMC is intentionally constructing the data science major to distinguish it from the computer science major. To determine the major requirements, the faculty committee looked at data science majors at other universities, considered CMC’s resources in statistics, math, and computer science, and examined the guidelines set by the American Statistical Association for data science majors. With plans to hire new professors specializing in data science, CMC currently has the faculty and resources needed to launch a data science major. Lately I’ve found myself thinking about how our class functions, and how us students can build each other up.

We’re also filled with what ancient traditions call “the breath of life,” which is prana in Sanskrit, ruach in Hebrew, and psyche in Greek. But it’s a poignant reminder that we’re material creatures—for dust we are, and to dust we shall return. Socrates said something like this—so did St. Paul—and they both got killed. Now, the right response to the grandeur of the world is wonder, awe, and—dare I say it—humility.
I am excited to meet and talk with everyone more! I’m beyond excited to help build a community at Apartments that is friendly, inclusive, supportive and fun, and have a great year together! Let’s yap anytime, anywhere, about whatever you want.
